Sensex, Nifty trade marginally lower

Benchmark indices were trading with slight cuts on Tuesday after the consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation print jumped to over five-and-half year high of 7.35 per cent in December. The S&P BSE Sensex dipped 80 points, or 0.2 per cent, at 41,780 levels. ICICI Bank and Infosys (both down 0.6%) were the top laggards in the Sensex pack. Conversely, HCL Tech and Mahindra & Mahindra were up 0.7 per cent each. The broader Nifty50 index was down 10 points, or 0.08 per cent, at 12,320 levels. The Nifty sectoral indices were trading mixed. Nifty Fin Service and Nifty Private Bank indexes were both down 0.3 per cent while Nifty Metal index was up 0.5 per cent. In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 40 points, or 0.26 per cent, and the S&P BSE SmallCap index was up 38 points, or 0.27 per cent.
