Sensex up 100 pts, Nifty past 12,150

Benchmark indices inched higher on Tuesday, lifted by gains in HDFC post the December quarter results. The S&P BSE Sensex was up 114 points at 41,270 levels. HFDC (up 2%), Hero MotoCorp and Mahindra & Mahindra (both up 1%) were the top gainers in the Sensex pack. On the other hand, Nestle India (down 1%) was the top laggard. The broader Nifty50 index was hovering around 12,140 levels, up 30 points,or 0.25 per cent. The Nifty sectoral indices were trading mixed. Nifty Fin Service and Nifty Auto indexes, both up 0.7 per cent, gained the most. On the other hand, Nifty Metal index dipped 0.5 per cent. In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 30 points, or 0.2 per cent, and the S&P BSE SmallCap index surged 80 points, or 0.53 per cent.
