Indices off highs ; Sensex up 300 points, Nifty around 7,700

The Indian equity markets quickly climbed off the opening highs on Tuesday. Among frontline indices, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 400 points or 1.7 per cent, at 26,430 levels after surging as much as 27,463. The Nifty index hovered around 7,760 levels, up 147 points, or 1.7 per cent. Information technology (IT) stocks led the rally -- HCL Tech, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra were all up over 6 per cent each. Hindustan Unilever (HUL) also gained over 7 per cent in early deals. Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index was up 4.8 per cent and Nifty Pharma index gained 3.8 per cent.
