Sensex slips 200 pts, Nifty below 12,200

Benchmark indices were trading half a per cent lower on Monday amid weakness in global equities as investors grew increasingly anxious about the economic impact of China’s spreading virus outbreak. The S&P BSE Sensex slipped 240 points, or 0.57 per cent, at 41,370 levels. Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hero MotoCorp, HDFC Bank (all down over 1%) were the top laggards in the Sensex pack. On the other hand, ICICI Bank (up 0.7%) gained the most. The broader Nifty50 index was hovering near the 12,150 level, down 90 points, or 0.73 per cent. All the Nifty sectoral indices except Nifty Realty index were trading in the red. Nifty Metal index, down 2.4 per cent, bled the most, followed by Nifty PSU Bank index, which slipped 1 per cent. The losses in broader markets were limited. The S&P BSE MidCap index slumped 46 points, or 0.3 per cent, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was trading flat.
